Best Practice in Youth Involvement: Junior Wardens - Cheltenham Borough Homes
Cheltenham Borough Homes (CBH) is an arms-length management organisation, managing approximately 5,000 properties on behalf of Cheltenham Borough Council. The organisation’s approach to community development and participation has been nationally recognised as good practice. ‘Junior Wardens’ is an educational programme aimed at 8-10 year olds living in the neighbourhoods which CBH manage. It was one of the very first Junior Wardens schemes in the country, and the first in Gloucestershire. The programme was developed in response to an identified need for affordable, educational and exciting activities for children. It also aimed to reduce the likelihood of their involvement in negative behaviour later in life, and to engage tenants of the future.
Working in partnership with local primary schools, the programme uses a wide range of activities including identifying local issues, recycling, environmental concerns and local citizenship. The programme gets young people to think about where and how they live and to make positive contributions to their community now and in the future.
