Best Practice Club: Building Trust Through Tenant Engagement

Our latest Tpas Best Practice Club brought together members from across the country to hear two excellent examples of how organisations are strengthening tenant engagement and making resident voices count.

We were joined by Asim Munir from St Leger Homes and Patrick Penny-Annang Islington Council who shared practical approaches, honest reflections and real examples of engagement in action.

Asim from St Leger Homes introduced their Tenant Voice model, explaining how they have created a flexible menu of involvement opportunities ranging from consultation through to collaboration. He also highlighted the success of their One Voice Forum, which has supported more than 70 consultations, alongside their achievement of Tpas Exemplar accreditation.

Patrick from Islington Council shared examples of targeted community engagement work, including their Resident Service Improvement Group and a successful Somali community fun day designed to rebuild trust with a historically under-engaged community. The session demonstrated the importance of culturally responsive engagement and working alongside trusted community organisations.

A key theme throughout the webinar was the challenge of engaging younger tenants and underrepresented communities. Both speakers discussed the importance of flexible participation opportunities, evening and weekend activities, accessible venues and partnerships with existing youth and community groups.

Attendees also explored:

  • how to communicate “You Said, We Did” outcomes more effectively
  • overcoming barriers to involvement
  • using community spaces and digital platforms creatively
  • supporting diverse tenant voices in scrutiny and governance
  • building trust through consistent communication and visible action

The session generated some excellent discussion and practical ideas for organisations looking to strengthen engagement within their own communities.

The webinar was recorded, so if you were unable to join live, you can still catch up and hear the full discussion.  Access the recording here
