This Black History Month, I had the privilege of reflecting on what it means to Honour Our Communities, celebrating the people, experiences and shared histories that shape who we are and the legacy we leave behind.

My presentation explored my personal journey from experiences of racial hate, fear, and helplessness to a career dedicated to supporting, empowering, and amplifying the voices of others. I reflected on the generations who came before me, my grandmother who arrived during the Windrush generation, my mother who raised us with strength and pride, and the family, faith and wider community that gave me my first sense of belonging.

These foundations inspired me to become a tenant advocate and community champion, challenging racism and working to ensure residents have meaningful opportunities to influence decisions that affect their lives.

I also shared the importance of housing organisations truly knowing their communities, creating safe spaces for honest feedback, recognising diversity and building engagement structures that give residents genuine influence.

For me, Honouring Our Communities is about recognising our past, celebrating our present and taking responsibility for our future. It is about creating opportunities for the next generation to feel heard, valued, and empowered.

Our legacy is shaped by the conversations we have, the barriers we challenge, and the change we create together. We all have a part to play. The question is: how will you Honour Your Community?

It was a pleasure to share my journey so far with the team and to engage with those who attended.
