Inside Housing Regulation and Governance Conference
Text
I recently spoke at the Inside Housing Regulation and Governance conference in London.
My session explored the growing role of tenants in social housing governance, including tenant board members, committee representatives and scrutiny panels, in the context of regulatory expectations. It examined how meaningful tenant involvement can challenge traditional, staff-led structures, strengthen accountability, and influence organizational culture, where I used examples from being Chair of my scrutiny panel.
I also considered how greater diversity in governance can bring overlooked experiences and perspectives into decision-making, why representation alone is not enough, and what landlords must do to ensure tenants have genuine influence rather than simply a seat at the table. Drawing on Tpas' work in tenant scrutiny, inclusive engagement and resident voice, I looked at what it takes to turn regulatory expectations into meaningful shifts in power.
The following day I attended the Housing Today Building the Future Conference, which took a senior leadership look at building safety, development, health and safety, and how is the sector engaging with tenants, the barriers and sector examples of processes of engagement to work through those challenges.
A fantastic two days of engagement, networking and learning.
