Realities of Scrutiny from a Tenant's Perspective: Key Takeaways
Text
Here are the key takeaways:
- Scrutiny only works if tenants feel safe to challenge. Jargon, pace, and fear of seeming difficult all hold people back.
- Information is power. Plain-English papers, shared early and with context, make challenge possible.
- The power imbalance is real, and it can be reduced. Training, support, and respect for tenants' time all help.
- Recommendations need a visible response. Tenants need to see what was accepted, what was declined and why, and what has happened since.
- Follow-through builds trust. When scrutiny leads to change, trust grows. When it stalls, tenants lose faith and drift away.
- Everyone can commit to one action. Tenants and staff each take away one change to make or ask for.
I was delighted to see the progress of many organisations in their engagement with tenants and how this is being embedded into the culture of the organisation, and how positively tenants were speaking about experiences. It was also clear from one tenant's feedback of how polar opposite engagement offers can be. It was a brilliant session, with engaging delegates.
