Tpas Welcomes Government’s Spending Review Commitment to Social and Affordable Housing

Thursday 12th of June 2025

Tpas, the housing sector’s engagement experts, welcome the announcement in the UK Government’s 2025 Spending Review, which includes a renewed commitment to investment in social and affordable housing.

With record numbers of households in temporary accommodation, rising rents, and increasing pressure on local housing services, this funding represents a critical and timely response to a national housing emergency.

Millions of people across the UK are still living in insecure, unsuitable, or unaffordable housing.

Today’s announcement is a vital step toward reversing years of under-provision and ensuring everyone has access to a safe, decent, and affordable home.

We are particularly encouraged to see funding directed not just at increasing supply, but at improving the quality, safety, and long-term sustainability of homes — values we know matter deeply to tenants and communities.

Tpas will continue to work with tenants and housing providers to advocate for housing that meets the needs of real people: homes that are affordable, well-built, energy-efficient, and embedded in thriving, supported communities.

Alison Inman, Chair of Tpas, said:

“The combination of a long-term funding programme, certainty around rents and much-needed changes to the planning system puts councils and housing associations in a great position to build the next generation of social housing. We must ensure that these homes are well-built, well-maintained and fit for the future.”

Tpas remains committed to working in partnership with tenants, housing associations, councils, and policymakers to ensure that this investment leads to real change on the ground.
