Free sessions for tenants at the largest virtual housing festival

Thursday 3rd of September 2020

This year the Chartered Institute of Housing's annual conference and Europe's largest housing festival is a virtual event

The event will run from the 7-11 September 2020.

The organisers of Housing 2020: the virtual festival, are keen to ensure that tenants and residents have an opportunity to engage with the sector and are therefore holding tenants question time (and a virtual social) on the first three evenings of the event. Socials run from 17:15-18:00 and themed tenants question time sessions take part from 19:00-19:45.

Topics for tenant’s question time:

  • Monday 7 September – building better communities
  • Tuesday 8 September – tackling inequalities
  • Wednesday 9 September – collaboration

Each event will have a guest speaker and will offer plenty of time for Q&A.

In addition to this on the main conference programme, there are two sessions which are available for tenants and residents to attend should they so choose. These are:

Monday 7 September 14:45 - 15:30

Fusion21 and Tpas are publishing a joint research report, which focuses on how enabling tenants to input into procurement and asset management decisions leads to positive outcomes for everyone involved.

Tuesday 8 September, 16:15-17:15

Why housing needs to understand economic abuse
Economic abuse is an aspect of ‘coercive control’ – a pattern of controlling, threatening and degrading behaviour that restricts a victims’ freedom. It is important for housing professionals to understand the dynamics of economic abuse as they have a key role in identifying and supporting victims. An expert panel will provide best practice advice and guidance.

Speakers:

  • Gudrun Burnet, chief executive, Standing Together Against Domestic Violence
  • Stephanie Orr, policy officer - housing, Surviving Economic Abuse
  • Sarah Davidge, research and evaluation manager, Women's Aid

Thursday 10 September, 10:30-11:30

It’s not okay – how can we avoid housing providers’ and workers’ language, behaviour and service delivery from creating and reinforcing stigma

This session will explore how the housing sector itself can tackle the stigma, with the launch of a toolkit developed by See the Person and CIH. It will provide the opportunity for housing professionals to think about what they do and how, their behaviour and language, to make sure that they do not demonstrate, create or reinforce stigma against people living in social housing.
