Council homes are for those who choose to rent and choose not to buy
My name is Kevin Flynn and I am a long standing council tenant with North Tyneside Council, a member of staff of North Tyneside Homes told me of your event on 9th November and I want to give you my views. Thank you and your organisation for given tenants the right to speak on the Right to Buy issue.
I have always been opposed to any council tenant buying the council house they rent, if they wish to own a house they should go out and buy a house built for the purpose of being bought and sold.
Council homes are for those who choose to rent and choose not to buy, all tenants are given a home because they need one, and that house is for the next generation to move into when the present tenant moves out.
The right to buy has resulted in former tenants getting a property cheaply, often selling it on for profit, and reducing the stock of homes for other tenants who need a home, and it is linked to the fact that Governments have nearly stopped building council homes for the future. The right to buy should be scrapped by Government, and replaced by the right to build millions of council houses.
